This book covers just about every aspect of the Victorian Age from christening to the “final journey.” You will find gardening tips, Victorian type homes, tips on handwriting and etiquette, short stories for both adults and children from the popular magazines of the day. The language of the fan is included along with a list of the Victorian “language of flowers,” and what messages were conveyed by a long list of flowers. The main types of Victorian architecture are presented and discussed. Excerpts on how to decorate the home are given.Proper ball-room etiquette is included. What is surprising about this book is the Victorian’s sense of humor (yes they had fun!) as the hoop and bustle are presented in satirical cartoons and short stories. Many vignettes from the era, like wedding gowns and sentimental wedding poetry. Victorian mourning customs are discussed. The book has many pictures. The book concludes with a list of resources for peeking into the life of this fascinating era. The idea for the book came from the author’s having collected 19th century magazines for many years. She compiled as much as she could of the best of these into this entertaining and informative book for those who like antiques and things relating to the Victorian Epoch.
